Niobium Metal Description

Niobium absorbs gases, is used as a degassing agent, and is also a good superconductor.

What niobium is used for and where it's used: About 85 to 90 percent of the world's niobium is used in steel production in the form of iron niobium. Just 0.3 to 0.5 percent niobium can be added to steel to increase its yield strength by more than 30 percent. Niobium can also induce precipitation and control cooling rate to realize the dispersion distribution of precipitates and adjust the toughness level of steel in a relatively wide range.

Therefore, the addition of niobium in steel can not only improve the strength of steel, but also improve the toughness, high temperature oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance of steel, reduce the brittle transition temperature of steel, so that the steel has a good welding performance and forming performance.

Some compounds and alloys of niobium in superconducting materials industry have high superconducting transition temperature, so they are widely used in the manufacture of various industrial superconductors, such as superconducting generators, high-power accelerator magnets, superconducting magnetic energy storage, nuclear magnetic resonance imaging equipment and so on. At present, the most important superconductor materials are niobium - titanium and niobium - tin, commonly used in medical diagnostic magnetic imaging and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) for spectral line (analysis).

Aerospace industry is the key application field of high purity niobium. Fine niobium bars are used to produce engines and heat resistant parts of rockets and spaceships.

Niobium and tantalum thermal-strength alloys have good thermal-strength, thermal-resistance and machinability, and are widely used in the manufacture of aero-engine parts and gas turbine blades.

Niobium alloy is used in the hot parts of almost all jet fighter engines abroad. In atomic energy industry, niobium has good thermal conductivity, high melting point, good corrosion resistance and low neutron capture cross section. Therefore, niobium rod is a very suitable material for atomic energy reactor. The key uses of niobium in the atomic energy industry include the inclusion material of nuclear fuel, the alloy of nuclear fuel and the construction material of heat exchangers in nuclear reactors.

Niobium has a high melting point, a strong ability to emit electrons, and has the ability to breathe, which can be used to make electronic tubes and other electrical vacuum devices.

In the chemical industry, niobium is an excellent acid and liquid metal corrosion resistant material, can be used in the production of digesters, heaters, coolers, etc.

Niobium is also used in the optical industry to make lenses that allow more light to pass through. Niobium can also be used in the lighting industry, such as niobium and 1% zirconium alloy can be used to make effective high-strength sodium vapor street lamps precision support, so that these small components have high thermal strength, excellent formability and resistance to sodium vapor corrosion performance.
